Over the course of a twenty-five year career, MAT MANERI has defined the voice of the viola and violin in jazz and improvised music. Born in Brooklyn in 1969, Maneri has established an international reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation, praised for his high degree of individualism, a distinctive marriage of jazz and microtonal music, and his work with 20th century icons of improvised music. All About Jazz considers ”Mat Maneri has changed the way the jazz world listens to the Violin & Viola”.
LUCIAN BAN was raised in a small village in northwest Transylvania, in “the region where Bartok did his most extensive research and collecting of folk songs" and grew up listening to both traditional and classical music. He studied composition at the Bucharest Music Academy while simultaneously leading his own jazz groups, and notes that his approach to improvisation has been influenced by “the profound musical contributions of Romanian modern classical composers like Aurel Stroe, Anatol Vieru and of course Enesco". Desire to get closer to the source of jazz brought him to the US, and since moving from Romania to New York in 1999 has been leading several projects creating music that reinvents the jazz idiom and collaborating with some of today’s most celebrated jazz musicians. His compositions are performed and recorded by several ensembles and he has released 19 albums under his name for labels such as ECM, Sunnyside, Clean Feed, CIMP, Jazzaway, all the while maintaining a worldwide touring schedule.
Vocalist, pianist, composer, improviser and music therapist NOA FORT is blurring the lines between written and improvised, group and individual, inner and outer soundscape, giving and receiving; all on the path to healing, with music. After a short stint as a biologist, researching bird migration in the desert, Fort decided to go back to her first love, music. In 2013, Fort moved to NYC, to pursue both her performance career and to become a music therapist. She has since became a bandleader of multiple projects as well as a regular collaborator of some of New York's most thrilling improvisers. "One of New York's more interesting artists" (New York Music Daily), "Fort’s healing vocal abstractions transcend verbalization...the music’s spare beauty sneaks up on you then stays with you" (Jazziz Magazine).
